Here are some more observations from Monday’s training.
— We’ll start with some injury updates. There are several players the team lists as “day to day,” including quarterback Sam Hartman, who injured his right shoulder in the Jets game. He, offensive tackle Brandon Coleman, defensive tackle Johnny Newton and linebacker Jordan Magee were all listed as players the team will be cautious about over the next few days.
– In other injury news: Andrew Wylie returned to practice, but split reps with Cornelius Lucas at right tackle.
— The Commanders had a lighter practice as they continue their preparations for the Dolphins, but Daniels’ budding connection with Zach Ertz was evident throughout the afternoon. Daniels found Ertz on the first play of the 11-on-11 drills, and the tight end ran forward and gained at least 20 yards.
— Another standout receiver was Olamide Zaccheaus, who had a solid game against the Jets with a 19-yard punt return and a 24-yard reception that was disallowed by a penalty. Zaccheaus finds ways to get free, creates distance from defensive backs and knows how to gain yards after the catch. He also gets more playing time as a returner because he’s usually with the group of players who catch punts.
— Like Sinnott’s physicality, Jamin Davis’ value is perhaps best shown in games. Davis has spent most of training camp learning how to play as a defensive end, and while there have been some rough patches during that transition, he’s also made progress. Quinn said Davis’ speed particularly caught his eye Saturday, and that helped the former first-round pick make four tackles, including back-to-back stops in the first quarter.
