Family starts petition to improve safety along Highway 6

Family starts petition to improve safety along Highway 6

FRANKLIN, Texas (KBTX) – Earlier this month, a woman died in a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 6 and FM 2549.

Now her family hopes to make this stretch of Highway 6 between Bryan and Hearne safer for everyone.

After Diana Burleson of Franklin died in the traffic accident, her mother and sister are now expressing their grief with a petition calling for possible improvements in road safety.

They said Diana was on her way home from a doctor’s appointment when she was killed in a crash at the intersection of Highway 6 and FM 2549.

Her mother, Bea Nix, said Diana had just received the news that she was cancer-free.

“She went back to the doctor that morning and he told her she was cancer-free. Then, around 4 p.m. that evening, the accident happened,” Nix said.

“She called me at 2 a.m. and told me she was cancer free, and then at 11 a.m. DPS came and told me she had died,” said Judy Jadlowski, Diana’s sister. “It was just heartbreaking.”

KBTX also spoke with Bonnie Perkins. Perkins and her son were involved in the accident and suffered minor injuries.

“People have died. How much is a human life worth? I know it’s expensive, but something has to change,” Perkins said. “Get those petitions signed and spread the word because we need to have a voice in the community.”

Petition on Highway 6 and FM 2549

Nix says she hears far too often about accidents on Highway 6 between Bryan and Hearne. She hopes this petition will help change that.

“We’re trying to help other people, you know, those who have already lost family members there,” Nix said.

Diana’s family members said the goal of the petition is to prevent accidents on that stretch of Highway 6.

“When it happens to you, you have to do something. And that’s what we’re doing for you,” said Jadlowski. “We have to make it safer for travelers, for everyone affected, for those who drive cars in the future. Maybe an overpass, lower speed limits, more police presence, red lights, anything to prevent accidents.”

The petition outlines several solutions, including reducing speed limits, increasing police presence and installing traffic lights at critical intersections on the highway between Bryan and Hearne.

They hope to collect at least 10,000 signatures and then present the document to government officials such as Governor Greg Abbott and Representative John Raney.

The public can sign the petition this Friday at 12pm at Franklin Supermarket.

The petition can also be signed at other local businesses and churches in Robertson County.
