How to clean up your Instagram feed

How to clean up your Instagram feed

Are you unhappy with the content on your Instagram feed? Unfortunately, there is no one-click solution to change what appears on your feed. However, there are certain steps you can take to clean up your Instagram feed and customize it to what you would rather see.

1 Unfollow accounts you are no longer interested in

To clean up your Instagram feed, you should first identify accounts that post content you don’t want to see. Most public Instagram pages post content based on sponsorship requests.

It’s possible that a page you follow has received sponsorship from a brand that requests content that doesn’t match your interests. In this case, it’s best to unfollow those pages. You can do this by tapping on the account name, selecting the “Follow” option, and then choosing “Unfollow.”

2 Hide ads that don’t interest you

The ads you see in your Instagram feed are related to things you typically search for online or on Instagram. However, you may not want to see ads of a certain type in your feed. In this case, you can simply tell Instagram that you are not interested in those ads and train the algorithm to show you fewer of them.

To do this, tap the three dots next to the account name that posted the ad, then select “Hide Ad.” Then select a reason why you want the ad to be hidden from your feed.

That’s it! You will no longer see these ads in your Instagram feed in the future.

3 Engage more with the accounts you want to see

If you follow a lot of accounts on Instagram, there’s a high chance that the content you want to see most is being pushed down by posts from other accounts you follow. In this case, you need to train the Instagram algorithm to prioritize content from certain accounts.

You can do this by engaging more with the accounts whose content you want to see more often in your Instagram feed. You should like the content they post, comment on those accounts’ reels and posts regularly, and share their posts with your friends.

If you practice these steps for a while, you will train the Instagram algorithm and you will notice that it will start to prioritize and show content from these accounts more than others.

4 Mark accounts as favorites

Not only can you engage more deeply with accounts whose content you want to see, but you can also mark those accounts as favorites so you don’t miss any content they post. Marking these accounts as favorites will ensure that Instagram shows you their content as soon as it’s posted.

To mark an account as a favorite on Instagram, tap the three dots next to the account name and select “Add to Favorites” from the menu that appears.

5 Change suggested content settings

You may occasionally see content in your Instagram feed from accounts you don’t follow. Instagram does this to help you discover more accounts you may want to follow. It determines which accounts you see in your feed by monitoring your activity on the platform—the types of accounts and content you interact with most often.

However, if you don’t want to see certain types of accounts or post suggestions in your Instagram feed, you’ll need to adjust your suggested content settings. To do this, go to your Instagram profile, tap the hamburger menu and select “Settings and privacy.” Then select “Suggested content.”

In this section, you will find various options. For example, if you don’t want to see posts from accounts that contain certain words or phrases, tap the “Certain words and phrases” option. Type the word in the search bar and tap the “Done” button.

If you don’t want to see political content in your Instagram feed, select the “Political Content” option and choose “Limit political content from people you don’t follow.”

If you don’t want to see NSFW content in your feed, select the Sensitive Content option and choose Less.

These are the steps you can take to clean up your Instagram feed. After following these steps, you will notice that Instagram will show more of the content you actually want to see in your feed. Now that your Instagram feed is tailored to your preferences, you can also customize the Instagram Explore page to your liking.
