ELRAMA, Pa. (KDKA) – Video shows a firefighter jumping from a burning home in Elrama, Washington County, after attempting to rescue a pregnant woman trapped inside.
On August 23, 19-year-old Sabrina Boyle died in the fire at the house. Boyle was 24 weeks pregnant and a graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School. Sources told KDKA-TV that the fatal fire appears to have been an accident at this point. The fire marshal is investigating.
Jefferson Hills Fire Chief Brian Chalfant risked his life to save the woman, who died in the hospital after the fire. A video obtained by KDKA-TV shows Chalfant jumping from a second-story window of the burning house.
Chalfant said he was called to the scene of the fire just before 5 a.m. on Aug. 23. According to sources, the 19-year-old woman called 911 for help and was trapped in the burning house.
The fire chief used a ladder to reach a second-story window. He walked through the flames, picked up Boyle, carried her out, and handed her to another firefighter before jumping out the window.
The chief suffered severe burns. He posted pictures on Facebook showing injuries to his left hand, triceps and both shoulders. The fire was so intense that it damaged his personal protective equipment.
Everyone else who was in the house on the day of the fire was able to leave safely.
