AT&T confirmed Tuesday evening that some of its cell phone users were having problems connecting to the cellular network.
In a statement to FOX 35 Orlando, AT&T blamed a “software issue” and said its 911 network was “functioning normally.”
“We are working to resolve a software issue that may impact the connection of a limited number of our customers to our wireless network,” AT&T said in a statement. It did not disclose how many customers are affected – or how large the affected areas of the US are.
“Keeping our customers connected is our top priority, so we appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this issue.”
According to AT&T’s social feeds, several users have reported that their phones were in “SOS” mode for hours. DownDetector.com, which tracks user reports of service outages for a variety of websites, saw a big spike during sporting events just after 4 p.m. Eastern time.
Are Verizon or T-Mobile affected?
Verizon Wireness said in a statement to FOX 35 that there were no issues with its network but that it was monitoring the situation.
FOX 35 also reached out to T-Mobile on Tuesday evening but did not receive an immediate response.
Officer: Are you calling 911? Try the non-emergency number.
In response, several local police departments and agencies across the United States posted on social media alerting users to the outage and asking them to call their non-emergency numbers if calls to 911 could not go through.
Here in Central Florida, Seminole County and UCF police have issued alerts via their social media feeds.
