The United States Postal Service has implemented a new dog bite prevention program to protect its employees. The program is called the Paws Program, and it was rolled out in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and the western New York region, among other states, in June. And now I think Texans should start using it, too!
The USPS Paws program is designed to help mail carriers protect themselves from potential dog bites. The program involves placing a paw sticker on the outside of a mailbox in the immediate vicinity of a dog.
A yellow sticker indicates that there is a dog at the next delivery address, and an orange sticker means there is a dog at that address – this alerts the USPS employee to dogs in the neighborhood.
Of course, dog attacks and bites are a major problem for mail carriers across the country, but here in the Lone Star State, the problem seems to be even bigger!
Although the Paws program has not yet been officially launched in Texas, it would be great if Texans would start putting these warning stickers on their mailboxes. Of course, this won’t help if there are stray dogs on the move, but if our USPS delivery drivers were at least a little warned, maybe the number of dog bites in Texas would decrease!
Here are some tips for dog owners to help keep USPS employees safe.
