We’ve learned that Stop & Shop is joining stores like Walmart, Target, CVS and others in phasing out cigarettes, starting August 31.
The grocer claims that this move is not based on sales figures and explains in a statement:
Our responsibility as a grocer extends far beyond our shelves, and we are committed to taking bold steps to help our employees, customers and communities work toward better health outcomes.
Stop & Shop strengthens its commitment to better health in New Jersey and New York.
The grocer will hold cigarette buyback campaigns on August 28 at two Stop & Shop locations with high levels of smoking and smoking-related health complications.
These stores are located in Boston and New York City.
The first 100 customers to trade in their tobacco will receive Stop & Shop gift cards and healthy snacks.
They also have experts with resources to help people quit smoking.
