RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The Spearfish Bicycle Collective’s 11th annual Bike Week kicked off Sunday to promote biking and working on bikes.
The organization is hosting a variety of free events from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, from the annual community bike ride to scavenger hunts and, finally, Dakota Five-O. Jeremy Smith, a board member of the Bicycle Collective, said the group is there not only to educate cyclists, but to empower them.
“Volunteer mechanics come by and if you have a bike problem or just want to learn how to fix your bike, the volunteer mechanics can walk you through the process. We help people fix broken bikes, we help people get bikes that they need, and we help with bike education,” Smith said.
Cyclists of all ages and even dogs met on Sunday for the community bike ride for a three-mile loop through Spearfish that began at Spearfish City Park and ended with dinner.
“It’s nice to see how much empowerment people can gain through the bicycle. I think Spearfish is a small town and a great place to bike to work. It’s just really fun to show people where they can safely go and how they can ride their bikes around town,” said Carol Lucking, board president of the Spearfish Bicycle Collective.
If you don’t have a bike to participate in Bike Week, you can rent one from Black Hills Bike Share right outside the park.
