There is no bad blood here: Taylor Swift seems to be in her “Brat Summer,” as she praises Charli XCX for their “hard work”.
The 32-year-old singer had an extraordinary summer, her latest album was played everywhere and even sparked a viral dance trend. The album, titled bratconsists of 15 tracks, including the hit singles “Apple” and “360.” This record has received great acclaim, with many praising her exceptional work – from the beats to the lyrics. Even 34-year-old Swift felt compelled to voice her opinion.
In an interview with vulturethe “Cruel Summer” singer said: “Ever since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011, I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sense. Her songwriting is always surreal and inventive. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing that consistently for over a decade. I love it when such hard work pays off.”
Swift’s comments come amid rumors of a falling out between the two artists after Charli released “Sympathy Is a Knife,” a song many speculated was about Swift. The lyrics – “I don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / I’m crossing my fingers, I hope they break up quickly / ‘Cause I couldn’t even be her if I tried / I’m the opposite, I’m on the other side / I’m feeling all these feelings I can’t control” – are said to be a reference to Swift’s past relationship with Matt Healy by The 1975. Charli is currently dating the band’s drummer, George Daniel.
Charli, who opened for Taylor during her 2018 career, Call Tour, took to TikTok to clarify that there was no diss track on the album and explained vulture“As an artist, you are pitted against your female colleagues, but you are also expected to be best friends with each and every one of them. If you are not, you are considered a bad feminist.”
She added: “People are going to think what they want to think… this song is about me, my feelings, my fear and the way my brain creates narratives and stories when I feel insecure. It’s about me not wanting to be in situations where I have self-doubt.”
The two artists’ new albums recently went head-to-head on the charts, with Charli’s optimistic and rebellious album competing against Swift’s incumbent album. The “Tortured Poets” section.
