Extreme temperatures pose a challenge for sports and after-school activities

QUAD CITIES (KWQC) – Due to hot weather conditions, special attention is being paid to student athletes and their safety during practices and games.

The Davenport and Bettendorf community school districts follow the IHSAA guidelines, while the Rock Island-Milan and Moline-Coal Valley school districts follow the IHSA heat guidelines.

Both the IHSAA and IHSA use the WGBT guidelines, which stand for Wet Globe Thermometer, which measures heat stress in direct sunlight, taking into account temperature, humidity, sun angle, wind speed, and cloud cover.

It is used at temperatures of 80 degrees or more and can be used indoors and outdoors.

When temperatures exceed 90 degrees, no competitions will take place and training will be cancelled or postponed until early in the morning or indoors in air-conditioned spaces.

Events affected by the heat today include:

  • Rock Island High School has postponed golf and cross country meets.
  • Rock Island boys junior soccer canceled and boys varsity soccer postponed to 6 p.m.
  • Moline has canceled all sporting events and moved all training indoors.
  • Middle schools in Davenport canceled all sports and high school practices were either postponed or moved indoors. The same is true in Bettendorf.
