Long Island Nets open tryouts scheduled for September 15

If you are a local basketball player and believe you have the potential to be a professional, the Long Island Nets want you in Massagequa on September 15th for their annual local tryout.

The announcement was made in a tweet on Friday…

There weren’t many details, but in the past the Nets have required applicants to pay a fee – last year it was $250 – fill out the required registration and waiver forms and show up for one of two sessions at the Fieldhouse Sports Complex, 5600 Old Sunrise Hwy. in Massapequa. Again, there are no details yet, but last year the first 75 people to shell out the fee got an invitation.

Not only are new Long Island GM Matt MacDonald and returning head coach Mfon Udofia expected to be on site, but it’s likely that Brooklyn coaches and management staff will be in Massapequa to take a look at the situation. Applications and other forms had not been posted on Long Island’s official website as of Friday evening.

The meetings are not public.

In recent years, Long Island has been able to discover talent at tryouts. Last year, local hero Terry Roberts from nearby Amityville was on the squad. Two years ago, Kameron Hankerson played 28 games for Long Island and played for Brooklyn in the Las Vegas Summer League in July. And three years ago, Craig Randall II was named the player with the greatest improvement in the G League from tryouts to training camp.

Roberts is recovering from gunshot wounds sustained in an incident in Philadelphia where he was involved in a shooting as a bystander. He participated in a Summer League tryout in July. Hankerson played in the Mexican League this summer. Randall played for Mayaquez in the Puerto Rican League this summer and will play for a Turkish team this season.

Long Island’s roster is primarily comprised of two-way players, Exhibit 10 camp invites and other players signed before the start of the G League season, which typically begins in mid-November. Jaylen Martin is the Nets’ only two-way player under contract. The 6-foot-10 wing was also a two-way player for the Knicks last year. He averaged 10 points in Summer League. The Nets have two two-way spots. Also likely to spend some time on Long Island are three Exhibit 10 players signed this summer: former lottery pick Killian Hayes, as well as two other Summer League players, wing KJ Jones II and point guard Mark Armstrong. Expect news on additional signings in the coming weeks.
