Council approves 4-way stop at Seward Elementary – Finger Lakes Daily News

Auburn will make changes to an intersection at Seward Elementary School.

To increase safety for motorists and pedestrians, the City Council voted Thursday to build a four-lane intersection at the intersection of Metcalf Drive and Mary Street and add crosswalks at the intersection, replacing the current crosswalk in the middle of Metcalf Drive. On-street parking will also be prohibited during student pick-up and drop-off times from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

At a public hearing on the bill last week, Matthew House, a nonprofit organization across the street from the school that provides homes for terminally ill people so they can die with dignity, expressed concern about how the changes to street parking could negatively impact its operations. The school district has since agreed to allow Matthew House to use its parking spaces if needed.

As part of its Capital Improvement Project, Seward is building a new parking lot and student exit loop between the Pop Warner Football Field and the west side of the school. The loop exit will be on Mary Street.

Speaking to Ted Baker on FLX Morning, City Clerk Chuck Mason said the city expects to have the stop signs up in time for the first day of school. As for the portion of the project the district is running, District Manager Jeff Pirozzolo said he expects all work at Seward Elementary to be completed by early fall.

Discussions about improving safety on Metcalf Drive began in 2023 after a child was struck by a car while crossing the street at a crosswalk.
