Lionsgate fires man who included false quotes in trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Metropolis’

Lionsgate has fired the marketing consultant responsible for Francis Ford Coppola’s latest film Big city Trailer that featured a series of negative, AI-generated quotes from famous film critics.

diversity According to sources, it was neither the intention of the film company nor of marketing consultant Eddie Egan to use false quotes, but this accident resulted from an error in checking the phrases he provided.

Lionsgate has released the trailer for Big city after it was revealed that the clip contained fake quotes from real critics criticizing the legendary director’s previous films.

The trailer contained fabricated quotes using words like “smug,” “hollow,” “pretentious,” and “sloppy” to describe Coppola’s acclaimed films, such as The Godfather (1972), Dracula (1992) and Apocalypse now (1979).

In a statement to Diversity, Lionsgate announced the immediate recall of the trailer, stating: “We sincerely apologize to the critics involved, as well as to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope, for this inexcusable error in our review process. We messed up. We are sorry.”

Although the studio did not explain the source of the fake quotes, online speculation suggests that the trailer editor may have used a generative AI tool like ChatGPT to generate quotes without verifying their authenticity.

The first teaser for Big city was released in May, where Coppola called the film the greatest work of his career and stated: “Our new film Big city is the best job I have ever had the privilege of leading.”
