Wright State uses .4 million grant to create in-demand jobs « Wright State University

A local university received a grant for workforce development.

Wright State University received a $1.4 million grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education as part of its regional Super RAPIDS program. This program focuses on education and training that maximizes workforce development. Wright State is using these funds to purchase new equipment for its Dayton and Lake campuses.

This new equipment will prepare students for careers in nursing, robotics and manufacturing. The funding will also be used to support classroom activities and enhance the student classroom experience at Wright State University’s Dayton and Lake campuses.

“Wright State is a place where we are big enough to have really good equipment and small enough that our students can actually touch it,” said Darryl Ahner, dean of Wright State’s College of Engineering and Computer Science.

The primary goal of Wright State’s Workforce Development Project is to equip the region’s workforce with cutting-edge technology, training resources and simulation tools so that students are job-ready upon graduation.

“This will ensure that our students remain at the cutting edge of technology as we move into the 21st century,” said Ahner.

Wright State University’s Department of Nursing will use its share of state funds to improve patient care and safety by enhancing educational opportunities for nursing students.

Nursing students at the Dayton and Lake locations learn how to use automatic medication dispensing devices to ensure safe medication administration.

Students learn to operate the same equipment used by Wright State’s academic practice partners, including Premier Health, which employs many Wright State nursing school graduates. Practicing operating automated medication dispensing equipment in the lab will help students in the clinical setting and in role transitions after graduation.

Wright State will also purchase simulators to allow students to further improve their nursing skills.

Wright State has 11,000 students and nearly 2,000 employees. The university offers a variety of programs from bachelor’s to master’s degrees, including an MBA program.
