Reservations for hunting opportunities in Virginia State Parks open September 3

WARREN COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – Reservations for hunting opportunities in Virginia State Parks open September 3rd.

Shenandoah River State Park in Warren County said controlled hunting is an important part of controlling the deer population and herd health. Controlled hunting also provides many benefits to the park and its visitors.

“One of the biggest problems, of course, is that we have a lot of traffic. Being able to limit the number of conflicts between vehicles and deer in the area helps with that,” said Dustin Haymaker, park manager at Shenandoah River State Park. “Thinning the herd annually also helps reduce the number of ticks migrating through the park.”

State law requires hunters to wear bright orange or bright pink. The legal minimum is a bright orange or bright pink hat or vest; most managed hunts in state parks require at least a bright orange or bright pink vest, which is more than state regulations require.

Hunting opportunities range from open hunting in designated areas to managed deer hunting. Hunters can also reserve stands or zones on a first-come, first-served basis through the online system.
