Bayer opened the Bundesliga championship the way it played throughout the entire previous season in Germany – with a 3-2 away win at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the last attack.
Ćabi Aons’ team finished last season with two trophies in Germany and a record unbeaten streak, losing only the Europa League final against Atalanta.
The German Supercup was also won against Stuttgart on penalties and it seemed as if the champions would win comfortably at Borussia Park – captain Xhaka shot with his left foot for Eurogoal in the 12th minute and Florijan Virc sank his left foot precisely in the 38th minute to make it 2-0.
However, the hosts became dangerous on the wings of the fantastic crowd, especially Tim Kleindinst, whose goal in the 43rd minute was disallowed due to a foul after a lengthy VAR review.
As a result, the VAR was on the home team’s side twice: in the 59th minute, Millimeter decided for Elvedi’s goal and in the 85th minute for Klejndinsta, when Štoger masterfully pushed the ball past the sleeping Tapsoba.
But in the last minute of injury time – the tenth – Bayer did what they had done all of the previous season. The VAR was on their side for the penalty, Swiss goalkeeper Jonas Omlin deflected the ball after Virc’s shot, but was still the quickest and buried it for the triumphant “apothecary”.
