Sabrina Carpenter gets into a murderous feud with scream queen (and former Disney Channel colleague) Jenna Ortega in the stunning music video for “Taste,” the third single from her latest studio album Short and sweet.
Inspired by some well-known Hollywood titles, including the black comedy Death suits her well with the immortal Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn and revenge film Kill Bill with Uma Thurman, the video by director Dave Meyers shows an endless, bloody battle between the immortal leading actresses.
During the carnage her boyfriend creates, Carpenter falls out a window, is impaled on a fence, set on fire, and has her arm chopped off – all at the hands of Ortega. Ortega, meanwhile, gets stabbed in the eye and breaks a few bones when Carpenter takes on the voodoo doll version of her.
Things come to a head when Ortega accidentally murders the friend at the pool where she and Carpenter are kissing. At the funeral of their “beloved friend,” the two realize they are better as allies and bury the hatchet.
Looking back, her late boyfriend was “clingy” and had “a lot of trauma,” Carpenter informs Ortega over some milkshakes while still in their mourning clothes, which are direct references to Streep and Hawn’s Death suits her well Characters. Yes, and “very insecure!” notes Ortega.
“Very unsafe!” Carpenter giggles. “You’re killing me.”
“Taste” is the third single from Carpenter’s newly released Short and sweet (released today), a follow-up to her acclaimed Emails I can’t send. The single follows viral hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” the latter of which also had a Hollywood-inspired, star-studded music video featuring Carpenter alongside her boyfriend, Oscar-nominated actor Barry Keoghan, in roles including Bonnie and Clyde.
“I love the faces of the 60s and 90s – old Hollywood, flirty and funny,” Carpenter said recently diversity Cover story ahead of the release of Short n’ Sweet. “That’s definitely the vibe of my album.”
Ortega, on the other hand, was a killer choice for the bloody “Taste” video. The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated star played Tara Carpenter in the latest Scream Franchise iterations and became a star after appearing in Tim Burton’s Wednesday series on Netflix as the titular daughter of the Addams family. She will also star alongside Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara in Burton’s highly anticipated film. Beetlejuice Sequel (in theaters September 6) as Astrid, the daughter of Ryder’s iconic Lydia Deetz.
