Seattle Mariners starter Logan Gilbert did much of the work Saturday night, throwing seven scoreless, three-hit innings in a 4-0 win over the New York Mets. But Gilbert and Seattle’s bullpen also received some pretty spectacular assists from their defense.
Mariners call up promising reliever from Double-A Arkansas
The most stunning net gem came on a first-inning double play. With a runner on first base and one out, Mets hitter JD Martinez hit a hard grounder up the middle. Mariners second baseman Jorge Polanco stopped the ball in mid-dive and then threw it straight out of his glove toward shortstop Leo Rivas, who was running toward the base. The throw was a little high, but that was no problem for Rivas. In one motion, Rivas grabbed the ball with his bare hand, tapped the base with his foot, turned his body and threw it to first base with a jump shot that beat Martinez by a hair.
The next spectacular play occurred in the fourth inning, when center fielder Víctor Robles caught a line drive hit directly at him by Francisco Lindor’s bat.
Polanco then made another impressive play at second base in the eighth inning. Mets hitter Francisco Alvarez, blocked by a pitch from reliever Yimi García, sent an easy blooper to Polanco’s left. Polanco sprinted to reach the ball, but easily overran him because the ball was spinning so much. As he moved to his left, Polanco reached back with his bare hand, grabbed the ball, and threw it to first base for an out.
