US Open 2024: Jan Choinski is one of only four Britons to win in the final qualifying round | Tennis News

Ten British players were on the qualifying list for the US Open, but only Jan Choinski made it into the main draw.

Of the ten Britons in qualifying, four reached the final on Thursday. Choinsky was the only one of them to emerge victorious, defeating Maxime Cressy in the final round.

After being eliminated in the first round of qualifying in 2023, he has made it into the main draw of the US Open for the first time.

He won three sets against the American Cressy and won 6:0, 6:7 (5:7) and 7:6 (12:10).

Sonay Kartalwho reached the third round of Wimbledon earlier this summer – which included a win over 29th seed Sorana Cirstea – lost to Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva.

Despite winning the first set, Kartal eventually lost 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, ending her attempt to reach the main draw of the US Open for the first time.

Highlights from Lily Miyazaki’s first-round win at the US Open against Margarita Betova in 2023

Lily Miyazaki had hoped to surpass her second-round performance in the 2023 main draw, but lost in straight sets to Germany’s Eva Lys in the final round. Lys defeated her 6-1, 6-2.

Billy Harris has also made it to the final qualifying round and hopes to move into the main field for the first time.

Harris tried to continue his impressive debut at Flushing Meadows. He started well against Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov, winning the first set, but Skatov ultimately defeated him 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Heather Watson At 32 years old, she was the most experienced of all and had reached her highest career ranking of 38th in 2015. However, she lost in the second round 6:1, 6:4 to world number 101 Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Franziska Jones had to give up her second round match against Ena Shibahara, who had advanced to the finals with 6:4, 4:1.

Paul Jubb The Finn Otto Virtanen had to play three sets on Wednesday, but finally lost 3:6, 7:6 (7:3), 3:6.

Jubb had previously beaten his compatriot Jacob Fearnley 6-1 7-6 (7-2) and had earned his first top-20 victory when he defeated Ben Shelton at the Mallorca Championships and was on his way to his first ATP semifinal appearance.

There was an initial disappointment for Oliver Crawfordwho was beaten by American JJ Wolf 6:4, 6:4.

Both Jubb and Fearnley impressed during the grass-court season this summer, with the latter winning his first ATP Challenger title at the Nottingham Open before taking a set from Novak Djokovic to reach the second round of Wimbledon.
