LinkedIn introduces in-feed video carousels

You may have noticed this already, as LinkedIn has been rolling out these features in recent weeks, but the professional social network is now putting more emphasis on video content via in-feed carousels of video clips.

LinkedIn Video Carousel

As you can see in this example, LinkedIn’s new video carousels give you a rich, side-scrolling display of video clips.

The videos you see are algorithmically tailored to you based on your in-app activity and noted profile details. Tapping on any of the clips displayed will take you to LinkedIn’s TikTok-like full-screen video feed, presented in a vertical format. LinkedIn launched this new feed in March as part of its efforts to adapt to evolving content trends.

This is a great opportunity for LinkedIn to promote its growing library of user-generated video content and increase its appeal, especially to younger audiences who are more likely to be interested in video updates.

Just last month LinkedIn reported that There are now 1.5 million pieces of content uploaded to the app every minute, with video being the fastest-growing content type. LinkedIn also reported that video uploads are up 34% year-on-year, which underscores this point.

Personally, I think it would be better for LinkedIn to add its own video feed that prioritizes live streams to showcase live events and industry updates in the app.

I’m not sure TikTok-style short-form videos will really work in the LinkedIn format, because like Stories (which LinkedIn has also tried), this more hands-on style of content isn’t really conducive to the kind of engagement professionals want from the app.

At the same time, however, video engagement is increasing and more users are uploading more video clips, so LinkedIn should try to capitalize on that where it can, and non-intrusive carousels displayed in the stream are a pretty safe experiment in that regard.

I just don’t think they’re going to drive significantly more video engagement, but we’ll see.
