Governor Gretchen Whitmer pleads for Harris: “She knows us”

“She’s lived a life like ours. She knows us. Donald Trump doesn’t know you at all,” Whitmer told the crowd. “Donald Trump doesn’t know you at all. Do you think he understands if your car breaks down and you can’t get to work? No!”

Whitmer, who introduced herself as “Big Gretch,” said Harris could empathize with Americans caring for a sick parent, mentioning her own situation.

“At 29, I became part of the sandwich generation, torn between working, raising my newborn and caring for my mother who was dying of brain cancer,” Whitmer said. “It was hard, but not extraordinary. That’s life.”

“These nights reminded me who I’m fighting for: people who are just trying to make it. Kamala Harris knows who she’s fighting for too. She cared for her mother, who also battled cancer. As president, she will fight to lower the cost of health care and elder care for every family.”

Whitmer hit out at Trump, dismissing his previous insults. The Michigan governor called Trump “that man from Mar-a-Lago,” a reference to Trump calling her “that woman from Michigan.”

“It’s an honor to be a woman from Michigan,” she said to applause. “Like women across America, we’re just hardworking and getting things done.”

When rumors arose that Biden was not seeking re-election, Whitmer was mentioned as a possible Democratic star to succeed him. Whitmer said Harris was “strong enough in a crisis to come up with a plan, tell the truth and bring people together.”

“Now, before the crisis, we have a choice,” Whitmer said. “Why not choose the leader who is tough, proven and a real go-getter?”

Whitmer, now in her second term, has been at the helm of the Wolverine State, which has seen a Democratic surge. Former President Trump has visited Michigan four times this year to court voters in the swing state.
