PITTSBURGH – Behind the goals of the second-year striker Albert Thorsen and senior striker Luis SahmkowThe Pitt men’s soccer team defeated No. 16 Georgetown 2-0 in front of a sold-out crowd at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Thursday night.
With the win, the Panthers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) remained undefeated in season-opening games since 2020. In addition, Thursday’s victory was Pitt’s second win over Georgetown (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) in the last three seasons.
Pitt took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on Thursday when senior striker Casper Grening played a cross from the left wing to Thorsen, who scored his first goal of the season with a header.
In the 78th minute, the Panthers extended their lead when Sahmkow dribbled past several Georgetown defenders and fired a shot from just inside the penalty area past the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms.
Pitt used a mix of progression and possession to close out the contest, securing its ninth win over a seeded opponent in the last three seasons. Notably, the Panthers improved their home record since 2020 to 31-5-7 with Thursday’s win.
How it happened
- Both sides played methodical football from the start and neither team dared to take a shot on goal until the 20th minute.
- Casper Svendby attempted Pitt’s first shot of the 2024 season at 19:33, but his attempt sailed wide of the goal.
- Five minutes later, Grening fired a shot that was blocked.
- In the 26:13 minute, Grening passed a cross from the left wing to Thorsen, who scored his first goal of the season with a header.
