HOUSTON, Texas – The Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team opened the 2024 season with an impressive 3-2 win at Houston Christian on Thursday night at Sorrels Field. The Runnin’ Bulldogs scored three points in the first half before the defense secured the win in the second half.
Gardner-Webb applied pressure with numerous shots early in the first half, but it was not until the 15th minute that the team finally scored.th Minute in which the Runnin’ Bulldogs scored the first goal of the season, after a solid shot from Elias Khodri. Breno Correia got his first assist of the year in this game.
This lead doubled just three minutes later when Khodri became the playmaker and Leo Andrade in the penalty area and secured a 2-0 lead in the 18:06 minute of the first half.
Houston Christian scored in the 23rd.rd minute and halved the deficit, but Caio Hughes extended the lead to two goals again by half-time, after a beautiful goal in the 38th minute.th Minute as Lucas Gonzalez counted one helper for GWU.
The Huskies wasted no time scoring early in the second period, scoring just 90 seconds into the second period and it was the only goal of the second period as the Gardner-Webb defense held strong the rest of the game to win 3-2.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Sunday, August 25, traveling to San Antonio, Texas to face Incarnate Word, with the contest scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
