Harley-Davidson owners meet and ride

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – More than 1,000 Harley-Davidson motorcyclists from across the country are in Charleston for the wild and wonderful HOG Rally, or Harley Owners Group.

Phil Kraft, originally from Nitro, leads driver groups as site coordinator.

“We have people from 36 states and four Canadian provinces, so it’s a big attraction to come together, chat, ride together and have a good time,” Kraft said.

Kirk Spells is the leader of a Harley owners group in Fort Washington, Maryland. He traveled to Charleston with his wife, Lisa, and they said they are enjoying the weather.

“It’s amazing that the weatherman or meteorologist always talks about how good or bad the weather is, but never says it’s a good day for a motorcycle ride,” Spells said.

There are 11 trips planned to various scenic locations throughout the state. Joseph Bryer enjoys the change of scenery on his first rally in the state.

“We learn about the community and the history of the area where we hold these HOG rallies,” Bryer said.

Keith Cummings, another cyclist from Maryland, said he got a HOG membership after purchasing a bike and has loved the experience ever since.

My wife and I bought a new bike. We were just getting out of Boy Scouts because our boys were older, and we decided to join the local HOG club and go to rallies and stuff with them and a lot of weekend events, local events in Baltimore.”

Some of the planned trips are up to 400 miles long and will last through Saturday.

The HOG Rally will feature a bike show on Friday to benefit the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association. Those interested in participating in the rides or events can register at the Beni Kedem Temple on Quarrier Street.
