There are many proud parents in Manchester today, but Kimberly Hughes is perhaps the proudest of all. Her son Jack Turner defied all odds to leave school as the top pupil.

When Jack started at Meade Hill School in Year 7 he couldn’t write his own name, but all his ‘hard work’ and dedication paid off and he now leaves school with an astonishing five GCSES.

Not only does he leave school with a degree that was once thought he would never receive, but he also leaves as the top student of the year at Meade Hill.

His proud mother Kimberly said: “We are overjoyed. He has done an incredible job. All the hard work is his doing, he deserves it.”

Jack, 16, unwrapped his results at North Manchester School this morning to find a well-deserved F in maths and F in science, IT, art and food technology. Although he was “a little disappointed” to miss the F in English by just a couple of points, Jack is ready to re-sit the exam at college and isn’t letting that stop him.

His mother once feared that Jack would leave school without a qualification as he struggled with setbacks and changing exam conditions, but instead he passed “with flying colours”.

Kimberly said, “We didn’t think he would ever sit it out. Then he was supposed to have extra time and writers, but then he was told he didn’t need them. To get here from there is a miracle. He rocked it.”

Jack continued to exceed expectations outside of school and achieved incredible results. The dedicated student combined his studies with his work as a Muay Thai fighter, training in Moston and training to become a Brazilian Ju-Jitsu instructor, now teaching young children.

Thanks to his excellent grades, Jack is now ready for college and has accepted a place at Hopwood Hall where he will study electrical installation before seeking an apprenticeship in the field.

For now, both Jack and his mother will be celebrating his successes.

His mother said happily: “He has broken all the boundaries put in his way and achieved incredible things. I am very proud.”
