According to a news release from the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, motorists in Garfield County should expect traffic delays on Colorado Highway 82 and surrounding areas over the weekend due to planned construction. Motorists are asked to plan for delays and consider alternate routes if possible.
Northbound lanes will be closed on Colorado Highway 82 on Thursday and Friday as concrete workers pour new curbs. Paving work on Thursday will begin at 6:30 a.m. with the northbound lane closed. Later, work will shift to the southbound lanes, where a closure will take place starting at 9 a.m. to remove a barrier. Paving work on the southbound lanes will continue at 9 a.m. Friday morning.
Pedestrian access will be impacted during the project. Crossings of the Colorado Highway 82 Corridor at 27th Street will not be permitted and pedestrians will not be able to cross 27th Street on the west side of the intersection.
All Highway 82 pedestrian crossings will be rerouted to 23rd Street. A temporary pedestrian walkway on East 27th Street will facilitate access to the transit station and continue along the CO 82 corridor.
Other construction includes Carbondale’s Highway 133 project at the Cowen Drive pedestrian crossing, which began on August 5 and is in its final week. Construction included the installation of a raised island, new signage and pedestrian crossing push buttons. Northbound traffic to Highway 82 has been reduced to one lane between Village Road and Cowen Drive, causing delays, especially during morning and evening rush hours. Work is expected to be completed around August 26.
With rain forecast for the weekend, there is also a chance of flash flooding along Colorado Highway 82 between Cattle Creek and Carbondale and Colorado Highway 133 through the Crystal River Valley. Check alerts.weather.gov for the latest weather warnings.
