It’s been a while since we had an official announcement The Batman – Part IIand the lack of updates following the announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran would lead a new DCU led to some speculation that the film may have been delayed again or even shelved entirely.
These were legitimate concerns given the decision of DC Studios bosses to (almost) completely overhaul everything that had come before and introduce a brand new Caped Crusader. The brave and boldbut Gunn has always assured fans that the BatVerse will continue as an Elseworlds franchise.
Now co-writer Mattson Tomlin has confirmed reports that filming will begin in 2025, and his comments suggest the sequel will be worth the wait.
“Filming will take place next year. We are preparing and I can say that the bar could not be higher.” Tomlin said ScreenRant.
“It is the sequel to the first part,” he continued. “But Matt (Reeves) is also unique. In the five years that I’ve worked so closely with him, I’ve tried to absorb as much of him as I can, and I’m so grateful for the time I get to spend with him, because he’s a true artist working in a world where sometimes art can’t thrive, and he’s trying to create something that really matters. Just being there and being part of that process is pretty incredible, pretty amazing. I’m so excited about the film.”
The plot details are still secret, but everyone from the first film (who survived) is expected to return, along with some characters from the penguin Max series. We’ve also heard rumors that both Dr. Tommy Elliot/Hush and Dick Grayson/Robin could be introduced.
If you have seen The Batmanyou’ll probably have noticed that this is actually where the groundwork for the introduction of Hush is laid. At one point, The Riddler reveals some dark secrets, revealing that Thomas Wayne played a role in the death of a journalist named Edward Elliot. Although this could just be a coincidence, the word “hush” even flashes on the screen at one point.
This was probably just a little Easter egg for the fans, but that doesn’t mean that Reeves didn’t choose Hush as the main antagonist of The Batman – Part II since.
As for Robin, several sources have now reported that Grayson will make his debut in the sequel, so we’d say there’s probably something to that. Details are few, but we’ve heard that this latest version of the boy wonder will be a teenager (possibly as young as thirteen).
The penguin The spin-off series will introduce the story. As far as official information is available, Reeves has stated that his sequel will continue this “epic crime saga,” which was later revealed to be the filmmaker’s official name for this universe.
