Atomfall – the alternate history survival action game set in eerie 1950s Yorkshire – draws on some of your favorite single-player FPS series.
We already knew that Atomfall was coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass next year, but last night’s Future Games Show gave us an updated look at the nuclear disaster adventure, where Ben Fisher, the game’s associate design lead, also shed some light on developer Rebellion’s inspirations.
“With Atomfall we wanted to try something new and that meant bringing in a lot of different reference points,” Fisher explains in the gameplay overview below. “One of the games that influenced Atomfall is obviously that you can see some parts of something like Fallout in it. But also other games in that similar genre, like Metro, even a bit of Bioshock.”
Watch on
All of these influences are evident in Atomfall’s desperate looting, the gunfights with desperately little ammo, and the oddly lush quarantine zone setting—maybe there’s even a bit of stalker going on here?
In combat, our protagonist fights around with melee weapons, rusty pistols, and tools you can craft along the way (Molotov cocktails, traps, etc.) in case your attempts at stealth go awry. And you’ll almost necessarily have to try tiptoeing as you pass, as limited ammo means you have to “choose each shot carefully.”
Rebellion appears to be designing the game’s difficulty options to suit all players, whether they prefer shooting or looting. Atomfall allows players to “fine-tune” the survival, combat, and investigation elements independently “to have the gameplay experience they prefer.”
Atomfall will be released next March, but check out the other best FPS games You can start playing immediately.
