Voters have voted for a programme: it is legitimate to discuss issues outside the programme, but there is a reasonable doubt that the isu soli “is a mirror of the opposition’s arguments to create confusion among the majority”. This was stated by the leader of the Brothers of Italy group in the Chamber of Deputies, Tommaso Foti, on “Agorà estate” on Rai 3.
“Regarding the ius soli, it is worth remembering how Riccardi himself, then a minister in the Monti government, revealed how this issue was carefully avoided by the left in the government because, according to some members of the Democratic Party, it would have led to a loss of votes. In the two previous legislatures, the ius culturae was approved in the Chamber in 2015 and then rejected in the Senate in 2017. In the last legislature, however, the discussion on the ius scholae began in the Chamber, which failed with the frontal break of the majority that supported the Draghi government. The rejection of the ius scholae by the PD foresees three proposals, each of them different, for which no timetable has ever been requested. There is no clear terrain on how the opposition intends to tackle the issue. Let us say one thing to the allies: this issue is not in the government programme and it is not even in the programmes of the individual parties,” he added.
