“It’s damn tough,” says longtime Challenger Series coach Matt Myers. “The CS is so wide open.
“This is my fourth year as a coach at CS and I’ve had incredible results so far. Last year I was in Houshmand and the year before that in Rio. This year with Nolan Rapoza, Alyssa Spencer, Nat Young and Sanoa Dempfe Olin it’s a little more challenging, more emotional. I have to be a little more therapeutic, take the surfers on a more emotional journey.
“I mean, it’s crazy. You saw Al Cleland, he had only made one heat before this year. Then he won an event. Mikey McDonagh won Snapper and has only made one heat since then. Jordy Lawler won Narrabeen and hasn’t even made a heat since then. That’s how hard the Challenger is. It’s a game that anyone can win.”
Above, Episode 04 of Matts League of wet shoulders is live and was recorded last week during Southern California’s annual clay court – the US Open.
“The US Open is so weird, with all the creatures and characters and everything in between,” Matt says. “And for some reason you feel like it has a lot more weight than the other events. You just feel it. That’s just the story behind it. The surfers take it really seriously. I feel like they get more nervous or something.”
“I remember Jadson saying that the US Open was one of his dream events to win. There’s something to that, I guess. Maybe because of Curren, Andy and Kelly’s history.”
