MONTERREY, Mexico – Second-seeded Emma Navarro of the United States beat Camila Osorio of Colombia 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) early Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Monterrey Open.
The 23-year-old Navarro, who became the 2021 NCAA champion as a freshman at the University of Virginia, finally defeated Osorio at 12:35 a.m. – 2 hours and 48 minutes after the game began.
Navarro faced ninth-seeded Polish Magdalena Frech at the WTA 500 tournament on the hard courts of the Sonoma Club. Frech defeated Lina Glushko 6:7 (2), 6:3 and 6:1.
Navarro won her first WTA Tour title in Hobart in January. In May, she lost to Diana Shnaider in the final of the Trophee Clarins in Paris.
Osorio, 22, won both of her WTA Tour titles on clay at home in Bogota, the first in 2021 and the second in April, before losing to Leylah Fernandez in the 2022 Monterrey final.
On Wednesday, third seed Ekaterina Alexandrova beat local hero Renata Zarazua 6-3, 6-4. Alexandrova will now face seventh seed Yue Yuan of China, who defeated Petra Martic 6-4, 6-1.
In addition, fifth seed Elina Svitolina beat Elina Avanesyan 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals against sixth seed Linda Noskova, who beat Xiyu Wang 6-4, 7-6 (11).
In the other quarterfinal, Erika Andreeva will face Lulu Sun. The 17-year-old Andreeva defeated top seed Danielle Collins the day before.
