Gunmen open fire on a school bus in Pakistan’s Punjab province, killing two children

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen opened fire on a school bus in eastern Pakistan’s Punjab province on Thursday, killing two children and wounding six others, police and authorities said.

Authorities said the driver, who was among the injured, appeared to be the target of the attack. “Our initial investigation suggests that the driver was an enmity with someone,” said Mohammad Shakil, a local police officer. He did not provide further details.

Police are still investigating to find out who was responsible for the shooting; so far no one has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The dead and injured were taken to a nearby hospital, said Ghias Gull, district police chief of Attock, where the shooting took place.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsoin Naqvi condemned the attack and ordered that the injured be given the best possible medical treatment.

Attock is a district in the Punjab province, but not far from the troubled northwest of Pakistan.

In Pakistan, attacks by militant groups have increased in recent years, especially in the northwest bordering Afghanistan. In 2014, Pakistani militants killed 147 people, including 132 children, in the worst attack on an army school in the northwestern city of Peshawar.
