Portland returns home for a series against the Somerset Patriots beginning Tuesday. The Sea Dogs held a 5 1/2 game lead over the Patriots in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division until Somerset plays Sunday night.

NFL: Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce chose Gardner Minshew as the team’s starting quarterback, preferring him over Aidan O’Connell.
Minshew, now in his sixth NFL season, nearly led the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs last season. He took over the team after rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson injured his shoulder four games into the season. Minshew went 7-6 as a starter, throwing for 3,305 yards and 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions.
• The Minnesota Vikings signed Stephon Gilmore to a one-year deal, making him the fifth cornerback the team has signed since the start of training camp to bolster a key position group.
Gilmore will receive $7 million guaranteed on a contract that could be worth as much as $10 million, his agent Jason Chayut told ESPN. The AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 with New England and five-time Pro Bowl selection is joining his fifth team in five seasons.

TOUR DE FRANCE FOR WOMEN: Polish cyclist Kasia Niewiadoma managed just enough to win the women’s Tour de France by an overall margin of four seconds in a thrilling battle with her rival Demi Vollering on the legendary Alpe d’Huez.
It was the smallest victory ever in the Tour de France, including the men’s race.
Vollering, the defending champion, accelerated powerfully on the home straight to win the stage, but her lead was not quite enough to overtake Niewiadoma in the overall standings.
SPANISH VUELTA: Kaden Groves prevailed in the final sprint to win the second stage – a 194-kilometer ride from Cascais to Ourem in Portugal – and Wout van Aert finished second to take the overall leader’s red jersey.
Van Aert has a three-second lead over American Brandon McNulty, winner of Saturday’s first stage.
