Wexford Science & Technology, LLC, announced that Mark VanderZyl will serve as the founding director of Connect Labs Baltimore. This new facility is scheduled to open in November 2024. It will be a cornerstone of Wexford’s innovation infrastructure, and VanderZyl’s extensive experience will be critical to its success.
Wexford Science & Technology is known for creating innovative, amenity-rich knowledge communities that foster growth and collaboration. The Connect Labs Baltimore facility in the new 4MLK building at the University of Maryland BioPark will provide 35,000 square feet of flexible lab and office space. Kathy Webb, Wexford’s Vice President of Connect Labs, expressed her confidence in Mark’s new role, saying, “I am excited to welcome Mark to the Connect Labs Baltimore team. With his experience in nurturing life science startups and his deep commitment to the local ecosystem, I am confident he will be a valuable addition to our organization and a driving force in supporting Baltimore’s life science companies.”
Jim Hughes, chief enterprise and economic development officer at the University of Maryland, added, “Under Mark’s leadership, Connect Labs Baltimore will accelerate the growth of numerous biotech companies and bring medical discoveries to patients and jobs to Baltimore.”

Mark VanderZyl joins Connect Labs Baltimore as Founding Director, bringing a wealth of experience in advancing innovation and entrepreneurship. Most recently, Mark was Associate Director of Startup Advancement at Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, where he was dedicated to supporting startups through critical resources, funding opportunities, mentorship, and industry contacts. In his role at FastForward, the innovation center at Johns Hopkins University, he was a bridge connecting startups with the tools they need to succeed.
Mark has played a pivotal role in leading and supporting strategic initiatives in drug development, molecular diagnostics, and digital health. His efforts have also focused on building robust partnerships within the Baltimore ecosystem and beyond, contributing to a vibrant entrepreneurial community.
