Meet Utah’s NHL players: Who is Dylan Guenther?

SALT LAKE CITY – With the Utah Hockey Club’s inaugural season just around the corner, it’s time for fans to familiarize themselves with the roster to better understand who will be donning the Utah jersey and what to expect from Dylan Guenther when the puck officially drops in Salt Lake City in October.

The next player profile is about one of the club’s most exciting young players: forward Dylan Guenther, to help fans get to know the Utah Hockey Club’s roster.

Dylan Guenther from Utah

Guenther is a 21-year-old right winger from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Drafted number 9 overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2021, Guenther is one of the organization’s most important young players and should continue to be an important building block for the team in the future.

But before he made his debut for the Coyotes, Guenther was one of the most promising talents of the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL.

Edmonton Oil Kings

Guenther was selected first overall by the Oil Kings in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft and quickly emerged as a star prospect, scoring 26 goals and 33 assists in his rookie season, earning him Rookie of the Year honors for the 2019-20 season.

After being drafted by the Coyotes in 2021, Guenther returned to the WHL and led the Oil Kings with a whopping 45 goals and 46 assists. He then stayed in top form in the playoffs with 13 goals and eight assists to lead the team to the Ed Chynoweth Cup. For his efforts, he was named to the WHL’s Central Division First All-Star Team.

Before his breakout season with the Coyotes last year, Guenther developed his game for several teams, including a brief 33-game stint with the Coyotes, 20 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL and 29 games with the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL before being permanently called up to Arizona, during which time he scored 29 goals and 43 assists.

Arizona Coyotes

In the 2023-24 season, things finally went well for the young striker: He played 45 games for the Coyotes and scored 18 goals and 17 assists.

Guenther is an incredibly talented offensive player with a great shot and good hands. But his greatest skill is how well he sees the ice and anticipates plays before they even happen. In the offensive zone, he constantly puts himself in position to make plays. Whether it’s finding a teammate to rush the net, positioning himself in front of the goalie’s door, or finding crafty ways to score, this young forward is already a dangerous weapon.

What seemed to unlock his potential, as well as that of teammate Logan Cooley, was lining up the two in an attacking line with Lawson Crouse. This upcoming season, this trio could have a huge impact on this team’s success as Cooley and Guenther look to improve their play and performance.
