Coca-Cola and Oreo have teamed up for an unexpectedly delicious collaboration.
The brands have developed two limited-time products: Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar Lemonade and Oreo Coca-Cola Cookies.
The dessert and beverage items, both available starting September 9, come in special packaging with a sleek black background and are decorated with images of Oreos stacked in an arrangement that resembles the silhouette of a classic Coca-Cola glass bottle. But what really shines is the contents of each package.
Oreo Coca-Cola Sandwich Cookies are made with two different cookies. One cookie looks like the classic chocolate Oreo cookie, but has a hint of lemonade flavor from Coca-Cola syrup. The other half of the sandwich is a red and gold Oreo cookie with the “Coca-Cola” logo and bubble designs. Between the black and red cookies are a classic layer of cream and pops designed to mimic the fizz of lemonade.
Details of the limited-edition soda are a little more vague. According to a press release, Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar will combine a “smooth blend of refreshing Coca-Cola flavor with flavors inspired by Oreo cookies.”
PEOPLE got to see how cookie-like the lemonade tasted and how soda-like the cookies tasted – and we were all pleasantly surprised.
Our testers could smell the Oreo influence immediately when they opened the soda can. The chocolate chip cookie scent was stronger than the actual flavor of the Coke, but testers still described the drink as a “chocolate cream soda.” Soda purists were happy with the subtlety of the flavor, but some reviewers would have liked more of an Oreo kick.
The testers were already fascinated by the look of the Oreo Coca-Cola cookies. As with the lemonade, the smell of the cookies was stronger than the actual taste. But the cola note in the chocolate cookie combined with the crackers in the vanilla cream made for a tingling bite.
Soda and snack fans who can’t wait until September 9 can sign up for a presale later in August on Walmart’s website — or on Oreo’s website to stay up to date on the cookies.
Oreo launched a limited-time Cherry Cola flavor in 2017, but this is the snack brand’s first official partnership with Coca-Cola.
In July, the cookie brand released a seasonal flavor: Mint Chip.
The ice cream-inspired sandwiches combine two classic chocolate chip cookies with a waffle cone embossing, mint chip flavored creme and mini chocolate chips. They first became available on July 8 and are still available at retailers nationwide.
Grocery stores are brimming with food collaborations. Thomas’ Froot Loops Mini Bagels are hitting shelves just in time for back-to-school. About half the size of regular bagels, the colorfully speckled, fruit-flavored bagels pack Kellogg’s cereal pieces into every bite.
The mashup items will be sold in packs of 10 for $5.50 and will be available until October 10th.
