Robert Downey Jr. was last seen as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgamewhich ended his meteoric rise through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU is the most successful franchise in cinema history and without Downey Jr. in this role, this would not have been possible.
Many fans thought Downey Jr. was done with the MCU after that; after all, he had made hundreds of millions of dollars playing Iron Man, so what was left for him to do? It also seemed like he was tired of playing Tony Stark in a suit for over a decade, which is fair. But Marvel was able to lure him back with an interesting offer: he’s returning to the MCU not as Tony Stark, but as Doctor Doom, a major villain who will likely make his debut in the upcoming film. The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Marvel is reportedly paying Downey Jr. $80 million to return to the MCU. Wouldn’t you? And he’s also returning as Tony Stark in some way, but not in a new Marvel movie; according to Gaming Biblehe will appear as Iron Man in a new attraction at Disneyland called Stark Flight Lab. Stark Flight Lab will be similar to the attraction Star Tours, a guided tour of the star Wars Universe. So basically I expect Downey Jr. to record a video of himself talking to the theme park visitors that will then be played while they sit in their moving chairs and learn all about Marvel.
The headline of this news states: Gaming Bible said that Robert Downey Jr. is “officially returning as Iron Man,” which is technically true, but a bit misleading since he’s donning the suit again for a theme park ride and not a movie or TV show. Actually, we don’t even know if he’ll be donning the suit; it could just be Tony Stark in his sweatpants.
There is no timetable yet for when Stark Flight Lab will open. It is one of several new attractions that Disney plans to spice up its theme parks with. With hits like Deadpool and Wolverine By bringing Disney back to the top of the box office charts, they have the opportunity to rejuvenate other areas of their business as well. We’ll see what they do with it.
